flying pearthe third attempt 4月15日 graduating from a chinese uniBecause I didn't attend a Canadian uni, I don't know if I'm just bitching about something that's par for the course, of if there's some merit to what I'm saying.
Why are there SO MANY forms to fill out for the dissertation/thesis? First form in December, to present our dissertation topic. Second form in March, to give specifics of our dissertation topic, to be presented to in writing and orally to a panel of profs who tell you why you can or can't study this topic. Third form was last week, the mid-term progress report. Then we have to submit our dissertations at the end of May, then defend them to another panel of profs, make final changes, and finally submit the final copies in the middle of June.
Are there really this many steps in other countries?
And THIS, I KNOW is an anomaly: graduation certificates from Chinese unis have the students' pictures on them (not a bad idea). We were asked to submit photos for that two weeks ago. If I'd known that's what the photos were going to be used for, I would have had some nicer ones made... 4月2日 don't want to play tagOMG Tagged is possibly the MOST annoying "networking" site out there:
So, after 12 hours, I have cancelled my account. If anyone sends me another invite - I won't be responding. Find me on friendster or hi5. (Although one thing I did like - they allow pics up to 5mb.) 4月1日 should i do it?3月29日 i love listening to...Tom Jones rapping. Oh yeah, baby. Sexy! Current song: Tom Jones - You've Got a Friend [Remix] 3月21日 Welcome Isla!!Congrats to Chris and Jill!! Their daughter Isla (pronounced like the beginning of Island) was born this morning sometime around 6am Philippine time. According to the happy father Isla, 6lbs, looks just like her mother but with lighter skin - yes, we were all relieved to hear about the maternal resemblance...
Unfortunately this is the most recent photo of baby Isla that I have. We'll just have to look at the mother to appreciate how cute she is. 3月6日 a new lowThis is why I'm hot
This is why I'm hot
This is why this is why this is why I'm hot
I'm hot cuz I'm fly
You ain't cuz you're not
This is why this is why this is why I'm hot
How the hell does a song with lyrics like this make it on the radio? Congrats to Mims for actually making money off such crappy lines. 3月5日 you know you're back in china...What the hell? There's snow on the ground!! It's freakin' March! It snowed all day yesterday, and now it's all ice. I went back to school today, and the whole campus was ice. They're asking for a lawsuit!! Oh wait, I'm in China...
Anyway, I had to go up to Beijing on Friday night after teaching, to take exams at the Canadian embassy (as part of my application to the foreign service which I probably won't pass but what the hey I'll try anyway). There were a total of eight English-speaking applicants and two French speaking ones. Of the English-speaking applicants, I was the only one who wasn't already working for the embassy! (Well, there was antoher girl but she doesn't count as an outsider cuz her husband works there.)
Finished the exams finally at 3:30, made it to the train station just after 4pm, only to find that the next train to Tianjin wasn't until 6:30. Since I was in no mood to wait at rainy Beijing station for two hours, I purchased a standing ticket to Tianjin North station. Argh. 1.5 hours of standing on a very crowded train - as you can see from the many many people in the hall waiting to boarding the train. Unfortunately, it was one of those situations that having money nor being a foreigner could help. Oh, and I stepped in a puddle.
But hey, check out my hotel room in Beijing, right around 三里屯 (Sanlitun) and not far from the Canadian embassy. OK, it's small, but check out the glass-walled bathroom! It was kind of weird to be able to see the toilet from the bed. And the sink, and the shower. Picture taken using the special panorama feature on my Sony Ericsson K750i phone. (Not bad, I think.) The room was Y188 (C$28).
Finally... It was the day of the Lantern Festival yesterday, the last day of Spring Festival celebrations. It was another CRAZY day of fire crackers! But at least we know it's all over. For now.
Now if I can only figure out how to arrange the photos in this blog... Let me know if you know how! 3月2日 philippines feb 13 - mar 01 2007This time around, we spent most of our time on the island of Sequijor, and stopped briefly in Tagbilaran, Bohol, to look at the famed Chocolate Hills and Tarsier monkeys.
Notes from our trip:
- The Philippines has the most gorgeous sunsets. We have many many pictures to prove it.
- I got my Advanced Open Water Diver certification. (Dive courses were a Valentine's gift)
- There is only one internet cafe in Sequijor. Interesting how quickly you realize not being able to go online is NOT the end of the world.
- Motorcycle taxis are called habal habals.
- A sting from a sea urchin HURTS
- So does coral reproduction. Ouch.
- Calamansi has nothing to do with squid, it's those little limes.
- Beer is cheaper than water. Everywhere.
-
- Facial packs help for a closer shave. (M)
- Leave your crying kids at home
- It's difficult to find good seafood. How does that happen? - Photos do not do the Chocolate Hills justice. You have to see them with your own eyes.
- If you wear a tourist t-shirt, ex-pats treat you differently.
-
- Habal habals in Tagbilaran can not be licensed unless they have religious quotes on them, like "Be high with God not with drugs" or "Jesus is all the world to me".
- The funniest quote was "I believed in God".
- Flying into Beijing Capital Airport after a beautiful beach, palm tree and clear blue sky holiday is very depressing.
I'm hoping to hold on to my tan for as long as I can!!
2月10日 china postReceived a letter from China Post today, apparently since we're (ok, Matthew is) such good users of international mail.
They got our postal code wrong. The main post office got our postal code wrong.
Anyway, they enclosed a price list for package delivery. Some discoveries.
-It's cheaper to send a package to Canada than the U.S. (except with surface mail).
-Germany is the most expensive country to send a package to.
-Hong Kong is international.
-It's cheaper to send a package by surface mail to the U.S. than any other destination except HK. 2月7日 wasting timeI stole this survey from MB, apparently it's called the reaaaaaallly looooooonnnng suurrrrrrrveyyyyyy. Or something like that.
